Wikileaks nominated for Nobel Peace award for 2011

Its sounds great and very excited right? Yes, WikiLeaks has been nominated for Nobel peace awards by Norwegian Nobel Committee.
Its founder Julian Assange, who is also called Michael Jackson of Journalism, must be definitely thrilled to see that his website has been nominated for Nobel Peace Award.
Legislator Snorre Valen from Norway’s Socialist Left Party stated his opinions about Wiki Leaks nomination for Nobel Peace that “according to him freedom of expression is very important and truth should not me cemented. he is letting out to make government liable for their actions and contributing to peace.
Leading “Nobel-watcher” Kristian Harpsviken says that he don’t think that it will bag noble award for peace as because of the criticism it is facing and raising tumultuous in both government and in public.
It’s very startling to see condemned website which made secrets of its own government and some other nations made publicly, nominated for Nobel peace award.

Chiranjeevi authorised to decide on tie-up with Congress

The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) Thursday authorised its president K. Chiranjeevi to take a decision on the proposed alliance with the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh.
A crucial meeting of PRP attended by its senior leaders and 15 legislators at the party office here unanimously passed a resolution authorising Chiranjeevi to take decision in this regard.
PRP leader C. Ramachandraiah told reporters after the meeting that Chiranjeevi would visit New Delhi by this weekend to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and take a decision on the tie-up with that party.
“Our party will not make any proposal on its own but will hear what the Congress president has to say and then our leader will respond,” said Ramachandraiah.
He said he had no knowledge of the reported proposal to merge the PRP with the Congress.
The PRP meeting discussed in detail the proposals to either join the Congress government in the state or merge the party with it. The proposals were reportedly moved by senior Congress leader A.K. Antony during his meeting with Chiranjeevi here Jan 31.
Antony invited the actor-turned-politician to the national capital for a meeting with Sonia Gandhi for further discussion.
Ramachandraiah said that the PRP was ready to work with the Congress to achieve its goal of social justice. “The PRP was formed with the slogan of social justice but we feel that it can be achieved only by working together with like-minded secular parties like the Congress,” he said.
Facing the threat of a no-confidence motion in the coming assembly session, the Congress is trying to rope in the PRP, which has 18 legislators in the 294-member house.
With 156 members, the Congress has a slender majority in the house and is worried over the threat posed by former party MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. At least two dozen party legislators have openly sided with the rebel leader who quit the Congress in November last year.
The PRP last month decided not to join the government but indicated that it may extend outside support, if necessary, to avert a snap poll.
The Congress is also looking at the possibility of a similar tie-up with Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), which has seven legislators.

Telangana groups to launch non-cooperation movement Feb 17

Parties and groups fighting for separate statehood to Telangana Saturday announced that they will launch a non-cooperation movement from Feb 17 to press for the introduction of a bill during the budget session of parliament.
Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other constituents of Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC), organizations representing government employees, advocates, students and others have threatened to paralyse the administration.
The groups plan to intensify the agitation to mount pressure on the government to table the bill for separate statehood to Telangana, which comprises 10 districts including Hyderabad.
JAC convenor M. Kodandaram along with leaders of Telangana government employees’ association and other people’s groups met Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy here Saturday to convey their decision to launch a non-cooperation movement in a Gandhian way.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Kodandaram said it was their responsibility to inform the chief minister and that they had met him and conveyed the decision. “We urged him to convey to the centre the strong demand of the people for immediate steps to carve out Telangana state,” said Kodandaram.
He appealed to all sections of Telangana people and leaders of all political parties to join the movement to bring the administration to a halt. He warned that people would not forgive those MPs and state legislators who stay away from the movement.
As part of the non-cooperation movement, the government employees in the region will go on an indefinite pen down strike. Employees in other public sector organizations will also stay away from their duties.
TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao said buses and trains will not be operated while there will be no work in government offices, courts and colleges.
“Only god knows how long this protest is going to continue,” Rao said Friday while welcoming two retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officials in his party.
The non-cooperation movement will coincide with the beginning of the budget session of the state assembly.
The decision has been taken at a time when the central government is contemplating to convene an all-party meeting this month on Srikrishna committee’s report.
The panel, which submitted its report in December last year, suggested six options to address the Telangana issue but opined that keeping Andhra Pradesh united with special measures for the development of Telangana region is the most preferable option.

What is the 2G scam all about

Following is a primer on the second-generation spectrum allocation scandal that resulted in former communications minister A. Raja of DMK being arrested here Tuesday:
The issue dates to 2008 when nine telecom companies were issued scarce airwaves, a national resource, and licences for 2G mobile phone services at Rs.1,658 crore (less that $350 million) for a pan-India operation. As many as 122 circle-wise licences were issued.
The opposition said by giving airwaves cheap and in a controversial manner of first-cum-first-served basis, the exchequer had lost billions of dollars. It also objected to the arbitrary advancement of the cut-off date for filing applications to suit some firms.
But Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself defended Raja’s decision and said May 24 last year that his communications minister had done no wrong and had only implemented the policy that was already in place. No norm wasn flouted, he added.
The opposition nevertheless stepped up its attack with two examples on 2G spectrum sale:
- A new player, Swan Telecom, bought licences for 13 circles with the necessary spectrum for $340 million but managed to sell a 45-percent stake in the company to UAE’s Etisalat for $900 million. This swelled its valuation to $2 billion without a single subscriber.
- Another new player, Unitech, paid $365 million as licence fee but sold a 60-percent stake to Norway’s Talenor for $1.36 billion, taking its valuation to nearly $2 billion, again without a single subscriber.
Similarly, another licensor, Datacom, later became Videocon Mobile and Stel now has large stake by Bahrain Telecom. The other companies are Tata Tele, Idea Cellular, Loop Telecom, Shyam Telelink and Spice.
The isue cropped up again after auction of airwaves for third-generation (3G) services that fetched nearly $15 billion and for broadband access, which fetched over $8.5 billion to the exchequer. Accordingly the the notional loss on 2G was estimated at $12.8 billion to $38 billion.
This estimate was arrived at by the Compteoller and Auditor General of India and leaked to some sections of the media, forcing Raja to regisn Nov 5 from the union council of ministers holding the communications and IT portfolio.
The official auditor also said the entire process of spectrum allocation was undertaken in an extremely arbitrary manner and that the advise of industry watchdog, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), was ignored and misused.
Meanwhile, Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy filed a suit in the Supreme Court seeking judicial intervention in giving directions to the government and probe agencies to act against Raja.
Acting on the petition, the Supreme Court had asked the solicitor general last October why Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had not responded in a timely manner to a request by Swamy to sanction proceedings against Raja.
Then in December, the apex court itself decided to monitor the probe, that was being conducted by multiple agencies, including the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate. The agencies have to submit their respective reports to the apex court by Feb 10.

Five dead, 800 hurt in Cairo clashes, PM says sorry

Gunfire reverberated across the Egyptian capital as pitched battles between government supporters and protesters demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak continued through the night and well into Thursday, killing at least five people and wounding more than 800. While the president showed no signs of giving in, his Prime Minister Ahmad Shafik offered his apologies.
Chaos reigned at Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the uprising to oust Mubarak’s 30-year rule, as bursts of gunfire and stray bullets felled two people, taking the toll of the Wednesday-Thursday clashes to five and fuelling anger among the demonstrators in this city of 18 million.
Mubarak, who became president in 1981, has refused to quit, saying he would step down only at the end of his term in September.
However, Prime Minister Ahmad Shafik offered “apologies” over the clashes and promised that offenders would be held accountable, Xinhua reported citing state TV.
An Egyptian minister was reported as saying that the number of injured had reached 829, including 200 people who were injured Thursday morning.
Despite the prime minister’s apology, the anger spiralled with protesters refusing to be cowed down and determined to retaliate.
Witnesses said the two latest victims were anti-Mubarak protesters who died from gunshot wounds. Amongst them was Taha Mohamed Kamel, 54.
DPA quoted his distraught daughter, Abir, as blaming pro-Mubarak protesters for her father’s death and calling them “traitors”.
As the wounded cried out in pain, they were rushed to a makeshift clinic in a mosque near Tahrir square.
Salma Eltarzi, an anti-government protester, told Al Jazeera there were many wounded people. “There are no ambulances in sight, and all we are using is Dettol,” she said.
“We are all so scared.”
Aisha Hussein, a nurse, said dozens of people were being treated at the makeshift clinic.
“People are coming in with multiple wounds. All kinds of contusions. We had one guy who needed stitches in two places on his face. Some have broken bones,” she was quoted as saying.
Television showed footage of tanks trundling towards Tahrir Square, but the military has not yet directly intervened between the sides.
At one point, the violence spilled out from the square to an area near the Egyptian Museum that has a huge collection of valuable artefacts.
The clashes took place after the pro-Mubarak supporters – some of them on horses and camels – plunged into the protesters and lashed out with sticks Wednesday. Anti-Mubarak supporters initially retreated but came back in force and surrounded some of the horsemen and pulled them down from their steeds. The horsemen were left bloodied.
Belal Mohamed Abdullah, who said he had escaped from the police station in Basateen as it was being set on fire during the unrest, claimed that he was later promised 5,000 Egyptian pounds ($850) if anti-Mubarak protesters were pushed out of Tahrir Square. He was also told by security that any charges pending against him would be dropped, he said.
“I was asked to go and remove the people sitting in Tahrir Square,” he told DPA. He spoke via the mobile phone of a protester who had subsequently detained him.
The anti-Mubarak protesters continued to remain defiant in the face of the attacks mounted on them as their protest entered the 10th day.
Former head of IAEA Mohamed ElBaradei accused Mubarak of resorting to scare tactics.
“I’m extremely concerned, I mean this is yet another symptom, or another indication, of a criminal regime using criminal acts,” said the Nobel laureate.
“The army has failed in its commitment to protect peaceful protesters. The fact that such violence is allowed to continue as they stand there begs the question whether they have orders not to interfere,” AKI quoted Amnesty International’s deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa, Hassiba Hadj-Sahraoui, as saying.
But Egypt has rejected international calls, including from US President Barack Obama, for the transfer of power.
“What foreign parties are saying about ‘a period of transition beginning immediately’ in Egypt is rejected,” foreign ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said in a statement, asserting that such calls “sought to inflame the internal situation in Egypt”.

Karthikeyan 12th fastest in Valencia test

India’s Narain Karthikeyan, driving a Hispania Racing car, marked his return to Formula One (F1) by clocking a best lap time of one minute, 18.020 seconds that put him 12th among 13 drivers who participated in the first test session of the season, here Tuesday.
The 34-year old Chennai-born and Coimbatore-based Karthikeyan put in 45 laps around the 4.0005 km Ricardo Tormo circuit, completing 45 laps in the 2010 model.
The Spanish outfit, which last year did not manage to do any pre-season testing ahead of their F1 debut, collected valuable data on the performance of the Pirelli tyres that replaced Bridgestone as the official tyre suppliers for this season.
“It did not seem to be easy to drive the new car after all this time, but finally it was not that difficult,” said Karthikeyan, who last drove an F1 race in 2005.
“I got into it quite quickly and yes, we could have done some more laps, but we have some minor problems. Overall, I am very happy to be back, and I think the body and the mind did pretty well. I am looking forward to the next two days (of testing).”
Team Principal Colin Kolles was happy with Karthikeyan’s performance on the opening day.
“We had a good day and could run out our programme. Karthikeyan made no mistakes, and he is still building up his speed. He has to adapt himself again to F1, to get used to the high G-forces and to the new Pirelli tyres.
“We have to analyse the data of today´s testing and I want to see how he (Karthikeyan) progresses on the following days.”
Meanwhile, the Force India F1 team’s pre-season testing programme also got underway with Nico HĂĽlkenberg and Paul di Resta undertaking their first official driving duties for the team since their confirmation in the driver line-up last Wednesday.
The team used the VJM03 – last year’s challenger – to gather further tyre data while valuable development work is continued on the VJM04 in the wind tunnel back at Silverstone.
Hulkenberg completed 71 laps with a best time of 1:13.938, the second quickest of the day behind Red Bull’s World champion Sebastian Vettel (1:13.769), as he got up to speed with the car and the different protocols and procedures employed by the team.
Paul di Resta took over late afternoon to complete his baseline runs in advance of his first full day of testing Wednesday. The Scot posted the fourth best time of the day after 28 laps.
Di Resta will continue the test Wednesday with Adrian Sutil taking over Thursday when the test programme concludes.
“Generally a very productive and promising first day with the team. The main goal was principally for me to get used to the team, the car and the new Pirelli tyres and my impressions of all were pretty positive,” said HĂĽlkenberg.
Seven-time World champion Michael Schumacher, in a 2011 Mercedes, clocked ninth best of 1:16.450 over nine laps while team-mate Nico Rosberg was the slowest among the 13 in 1:19.930.

Coffee boosts women’s brainpower but addles men’s

Drinking coffee boosts women’s brainpower but addles that of men.
While sipping a cappuccino or quaffing an espresso boosts women’s performance, the same drink impairs men’s memories and slows down their decision-making.
And given that Britons alone down 70 million cups of coffee a day, the implications are significant, reports the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.
Psychologist Lindsay St. Claire, Bristol University, who led the study, said: “Many meetings, including those at which military and other decisions are made, are likely to be male-dominated.”
“Because caffeine is the most widely consumed drug in the world, the global implications are potentially staggering,” said Claire, according to the Daily Mail.
The researchers wanted to examine what coffee does to the body when it is already under stress, such as during a tense meeting. They recruited 64 men and women and put them in same-sex pairs.
Researchers found that men’s performance in memory tests was “greatly impaired” if they drank the caffeinated coffee.
They also took an average of 20 seconds longer to complete the puzzles than those on the decaffeinated coffee. But women completed the puzzles 100 seconds faster if they had been given caffeine.

Heart attack risk higher for women whose mothers had strokes

Women whose mothers are victims of stroke are at a far higher risk of a heart attack.
Women may be more at risk of inherited forms of heart disease. In men, it tends to be triggered by lifestyle factors such as diet, drinking and smoking.
Oxford University researchers looked at more than 2,200 female patients who had suffered a stroke, heart attack or angina, the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics reports.
They found that a far higher proportion of the women’s mothers had suffered a stroke compared to their fathers, according to the Daily Mail.
The study also found that the women with heart problems were more likely to have a sister who had suffered a stroke than a brother.
In an earlier study on the same group of women, researchers found that they faced a higher risk of heart attack before the age of 65 if their mothers also had a heart attack at an early age.
Other researchers have shown that a daughter’s stroke risk is linked to her mother’s history of stroke.
Lead author Amitava Banerjee from the Stroke Prevention Research Unit at Oxford said: “Our study results point towards sex-specific heritability of vascular disease across different arterial territories – namely coronary and cerebral artery territories.
“Moreover, traditional risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes don’t account for heart attack risk as clearly in women as in men, and tools to gauge risk in women are inadequate.”
Some 55,000 women die from heart disease every year, compared with 66,000 men, in the UK.

Internet will run out of IP addresses by Friday

The internet will run out of numerical IP (Internet Protocol) addresses by Friday. But the web will not ground to a halt. A new system, Internet Protocol version 6 or IPv6, will replace version 4.
Every device connected to the net is assigned a number. But with millions of web enabled phones now online, the numbers are running out.
The system, set up in the 1980s with a maximum of 4.1 billion addresses, was supposed to never run out. The original creators of the web initially thought it would be used only for academic purposes.
IP addresses act as phone numbers to ensure that surfers reach websites and e-mails and find their destination, the Daily Mail reports.
The authority that governs such addresses will distribute the last batches Thursday.
“It will just be ‘business as usual’ if everyone gets their job done,” said John Curran, chief executive of the American Registry for Internet Numbers, one of five regional groups that dole out such addresses. They cover the US, Canada and the Caribbean.

Cosmos 250 times bigger than visible universe

Just how big is the universe is a question that has baffled cosmologists for decades. But now scientists have reasons to believe that it is at least 250 times bigger than the visible universe.
Researchers at Oxford University and Imperial College, London, focused on measuring the curvature of the universe.
Should it be flat or open, then the universe must be infinite, but if it is closed like a sphere, then it has to be of a limited size.
Researcher Mihran Vardanyan and his team have come up with a new complex method of analysing all previous research they call the Bayesian method, the Daily Mail reports.
A main source of data they used was measuring the size of waves in the early universe that became frozen in the cosmic microwave background – or baryonic acoustic oscillations – using telescopes in space.
They found that the most likely model is a tightly constrained curvature of the universe – which means it’s flat.
It’s also at least 250 times bigger than the ‘Hubble volume’, which is approximately the size of the visible universe.
Scientists recently worked out the size of the visible universe using data collected by Hubble Space Telescope.
Last week, astronomers discovered the oldest and most distant object in the universe. The cluster of stars, dust and gas was spotted by Hubble as it orbited Earth. Its light took 13.2 billion years to reach our planet.
The galaxy is so remote, scientists are observing it at a time when the universe was in its infancy, just 480 million years after the Big Bang.

Eager to compose music for Bollywood again: Zakir Hussain

He composed music for critically acclaimed “Mr And Mrs Iyer” and now tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain is eager to make music for Bollywood films again.
“The problem is that I’m here always for a very less time and to give music in a Bollywood film you have to be here because producers can call you any time to make changes in the song; so it becomes a little difficult for me to do it,” said Hussain who is based in US.
“But it has been a dream because I used to play tabla in the recordings of Madan Mohan and Naushad; so even I had a desire to compose music for Hindi films. So whenever I get a chance and if time allows, I would love to do it,” he added.
In the past, the Grammy winner has composed soul-stirring music for Sai Paranjape’s “Saaz” (1998) and for an Indo-American production “For Real” (2009).

It was Aamir, Shahrukh and finally Aamir in Dhoom 3

In major news that took place at the beginning of the week, it was confirmed that Aamir Khan would be donning the cap of hugely anticipated role in upcoming Dhoom franchise. There were two things that were evident after the first promo of Dhoom 2, one, it would be a runaway success and the second that Hrithik would be occupying the limelight in the film. For the attention of viewers both happened. Hrithik was catapulted into the big league and the series one assumed would definitely continue.
Dhoom 2 was one of the most expensive films that Yashraj has made till date. The film’s collections were double than expected and it did break all records of Yashraj’s films in terms of revenues that were garnered with in few weeks.
The question that would have aroused in Aditya Chopra’s mind after the enormous success of Dhoom 2 is who, who would he cast as the villain/baddie in the next franchise. It was clear in Adhi’s mind that Aamir would be the perfect choice and there were reasons attached to it. They include Aamir’s hugely successful films off late and the way that his film Ghajini broke records of all previous Bollywood films in terms of collections with in weak or two of its release. At the same time the think tank of Yashraj would have thought that Aamir would be a better choice than his best buddy, Yashraj’s hero Shahrukh considering Aamir’s portrayal of lesser grey character’s than SRK.
But the most important point that Adhi would have focused to rope in Aamir is that the “Moolah” Yashraj can generate with Aamir in the lead than say SRK for the first few weeks. It was a clear example for Adhi during his film’s release “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”, which clashed with Aamir’s Ghajini with in a week difference. The Moolah that Ghajini raked in was talked all over but one never uttered about Adhi’s film revenue; even though it did a good business. Keeping this in mind he would have went to Aamir to narrate Dhoom 3 script. As usual the perfectionist Khan who goes through everything of a particular script must have raised some objections to which Adhi one suppose didn’t had any answers.
Media were all over the place in reporting the incident that Aamir would be the next baddie in Dhoom franchisee. Irked by one would say Aamir’s objections, the script would have went to Yashraj’s family hero SRK.
Since more than a year there were speculations, is Aamir roped in or SRK. Mind you SRK would be playing one good baddie considering his track record in Baazigar and Darr. Adhi was in a dilemma to choose whom. One can easily understand that Adhi would have made some changes to make SRK compatible to the role. But all was not well with regards to Adhi’s thinking and after much deliberation, with the assistance of Victor [Vijay Krishna Acharya], Aamir was narrated a perfect script with out any loopholes.
Off late Yashraj films are having a bad run at the box-office, which is not as one expects. Films like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Aaja Nachle, Tashan, Roadside Romeo, Dil bole Hadippa have faired miserably at the box-office. The last major blockbuster they had, going by the records is “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”.
In order to gain back the lost reputation and money with regards to one film, Aamir was pulled in, as who can forget the Moolah that 3 idiots collected. Mind you if one guy who can break his own collection records, it is Aamir and it was evident when Ghajini’s records were surpassed by 3 idiots.

New protein drives prostate cancer cells to ’suicide’

Scientists have identified a protein that halts growth of prostate cancer cells and even drives them to commit ’suicide’.
A drug that boosts levels of the protein, called FUS, could stop the disease from spreading, saving many of the thousands of lives claimed by the disease every year.
The breakthrough at Imperial College London, could also help doctors more accurately distinguish the more common, slower-growing forms of prostate cancer from the more aggressive, faster-growing types, the Daily Mail reports.
These researchers have shown that FUS, which occurs naturally in cells, can stem the growth of prostate tumour cells in a dish and trigger a series of reactions that leads to their death, according to an Imperial College statement.
Charlotte Bevan, senior study author, said: “These findings suggest that FUS might be able to suppress tumour growth and stop it from spreading to other parts of the body where it can be deadly.”
“It’s early stages yet, but if further studies confirm these findings, then FUS might be a promising target for future therapies.”
Doctors currently use a variety of techniques, including blood tests, biopsies, microscopy and scans, to determine risk and treatment levels.
But the results are not wholly reliable – meaning that many men are subjected to unnecessary surgery and radiotherapy, both of which carry a high risk of incontinence and impotence.

Pakistan has 100 nuclear weapons, doubled its arsenal: Post

Pakistan has doubled its nuclear arsenal in the last several years and now has more than 100 deployed weapons, more than that of India, the Washington Post reported Monday.
The Pakistanis have significantly accelerated production of uranium and plutonium for bombs and developed new weapons to deliver them, the influential US daily reported citing estimates by non-government analysts. After years of approximate weapons parity, Pakistan has now edged ahead of India, its nuclear-armed rival, experts cited by the Post said.
While Pakistan has produced more nuclear-armed weapons, India is believed to have larger existing stockpiles of such fissile material for future weapons. Four years ago, the Pakistani arsenal was estimated at 30 to 60 weapons, the Post said.
Those figures make Pakistan the world’s fifth-largest nuclear power, ahead of “legal” powers France and Britain, the Post said. The vast bulk of nuclear stockpiles are held by the United States and Russia, followed by China.
Pakistan has no declared nuclear doctrine, but sees its arsenal as a deterrent to an attack by the Indian forces that are heavily deployed near its border, the daily said. India, on the other hand, has vowed no-first-use of nuclear weapons, but it depends on its second-strike capability to deter the Pakistanis, the paper said.
“They have been expanding pretty rapidly,” David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security and a leading analyst on the world’s nuclear forces, was quoted as saying. “They’re always trying to downplay” the numbers and insisting that “it’s smaller than you think.”
Based on recently accelerated production of plutonium and highly enriched uranium, he said, “they could have more than doubled in that period,” with current estimates of up to 110 weapons.
The Post cited Hans M. Kristensen, director of the nuclear information project at the Federation of American Scientists and author of the annual global nuclear weapons inventory published in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, as saying it was “not unreasonable” to say that Pakistan has now produced at least 100 weapons.
Shaun Gregory, director of the Pakistan Security Research Unit at Britain’s University of Bradford, put the number at between 100 and 110.
Some Pakistani officials have intimated they have even more, the Post said. But just as the United States has a vested interest in publicly playing down the total, Pakistan sees advantage in “playing up the number of weapons they’ve got,” Gregory said.
“They’re at a disadvantage with India with conventional forces,” in terms of both weaponry and personnel.
While continuing to produce weapons-grade uranium at two sites, Pakistan has sharply increased its production of plutonium, allowing it to make lighter warheads for more mobile delivery systems, the Post said.
Only three nuclear countries – Pakistan, India and Israel – have not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). India is estimated to have 60 to 100 weapons; numbers are even less precise for Israel’s undeclared programme, estimated at up to 200., said the paper which appeared to have done considerable research on this sensitive subject.

Addicted to smoking? blame your genes

Those who say they cannot quit smoking, no matter how hard they try, could now blame their genes.
Scientists have discovered a brain pathway which, if not functioning correctly, can lead to an uncontrollable desire to smoke, reports dailymail.co.uk.
The fault lies in a receptor protein that is normally activated by the nicotine in cigarettes and dampens the desire for yet more of the drug.
The team found that when rats were genetically changed to block the protein, they consumed far more nicotine.
Professor Paul Kenny, of The Scripps Research Institute, Florida, said: “These findings point to a promising target for the development of potential anti-smoking therapies.”
“The data could explain why some people are far more vulnerable to the addictive properties of nicotine and more likely to develop smoking-associated diseases such as lung cancer,” he added.
