Scientists discover hottest ever planet

An exoplanet has been found to be the hottest planet discovered so far with a record-breaking temperature of 3,200 degrees Celsius.

The planet WASP-33b, is also known as HD15082. Its scorching temperature is explained by its close orbit around its star, itself one of the hottest planet-hosting stars at 7,160 degrees Celsius, the New Scientist reports.

Scientists were first alerted to WASP-33b’s existence in 2006, after observing regularly timed dimmings of its parent star.

This was caused by the planet, four-and-a-half times the size of Jupiter, orbiting its star at less than seven percent the distance of Mercury from the Sun, according to the Daily Mail.

This is not to be scoffed at considering the star’s temperature of 7,160 degrees Celsius dwarfs the sun’s 5,600 degrees Celsius.

A study led by Alexis Smith of Keele University in Staffordshire, Britain, discovered WASP-33b’s thermal emission using an infrared camera on the William Herschel Telescope in the Canary Islands.

Its temperature is 900 degrees Celsius hotter than what was formerly the hottest known planet in the Milky Way Galaxy. Scientists believe that the planet, called WASP-12b and which lies 600 light-years away from Earth, may only have another 10 million years left before it is completely devoured.

Lack of good night’s sleep a major health concern

Almost two-thirds of people struggle to get a good night’s rest, which according to a British research, constitutes a major public health concern.

Some 60 percent adults admit rarely getting the recommended six or seven hours of sleep every night.

More than a third suffer from insomnia, and many have battled with the condition for years. Doctors warn that sleeplessness leads to depression, lack of concentration and an inability to carry out simple tasks.

According to the findings of a major report, insomniacs are four times more likely to suffer from relationship problems, according to the Daily Mail.

They are also three times more likely to have difficulties concentrating or be in a bad mood and twice as likely to have energy slumps.

A quarter of adults have other sleep-related problems such as teeth grinding or sleep apnea – a disorder characterised by abnormal pauses in breathing, which causes sufferers to wake up in the night.

Just 39 percent of people sleep well, according to the survey of 5,300 by the Mental Health Foundation in the UK.

It says children should be taught the health risks of lack of sleep at school and also recommends GPs are trained to better diagnose those with problems.

Andrew McCulloch of the Mental Health Foundation said: “Sleep has for too long been neglected as a major influence on the physical and mental health of the nation. It is crucial we treat the issue of sleep problems as the major public health concern it is.”

Experts say adults need at least five hours’ uninterrupted sleep every day to properly concentrate and function.

India unveils LCA at R-Day parade

India Wednesday unveiled for the first time at its Republic Day parade its indigenous Light Combat Aircraft that obtained its initial operational clearance to be fully airworthy Jan 10 this year.

The aircraft’s trainer version, which has two-seat tandem configuration, is derived from the fighter version that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is building for the IAF and the Navy.

The LCA Tejas has been in the works for over 27 years and has witnessed a 3,000 percent jump in its development costs. It is likely to be inducted into the air force sometime around December 2012.

The single-engine, multi-role fighter is powered by the US General Electric’s GE-F-404-IN-20 engines.

The IAF has already placed an order for two squadrons (40 aircraft) of the air force version of the fighter jet and is expected to acquire five more squadrons (100 aircraft), though these next lot of aircraft would be powered by the more powerful GE-F414 engines for which the DRDO placed orders late last year.

The first two Tejas squadron are likely to be based at the Sulur air force station near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

The cost of the aircraft development has shot up from the initial allocation of Rs.560 crore in 1983 to Rs.17,269 crore at present.

Staying fat may be better for your health

The idea that weight is harmful has been “exaggerated” and fat people may actually live longer, suggests a new study by US scientists.

The University of California study, based on analysis of 350,000 people in the US, suggests that the obese put their health in greater danger when they obsessively try to slim down.

The researchers claim that society’s obsession with dieting is “ineffective” and often leads to people becoming fatter as they crave food and go on a binge.

It recommends people should eat a varied and balanced diet, and take “enjoyable” amounts of exercise, even if they still end up carrying a few extra pounds, the Daily Mail reported, citing the Nutrition Journal.

Researcher Linda Bacon said that although health professionals mean well when they suggest people lose weight, “our analysis indicates that researchers have long interpreted research data through a biased lens”.

The study claims there is evidence to show that overweight people live longer than normal. Those who are obese in old age also tend to live longer than elderly people who are thin.

They are also more likely to survive certain health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and kidney failure.

Although it is well-known that obesity puts people at higher risk of heart disease and other illnesses, the researchers say that “being fat” is not the cause.

Instead, they blame poor diet and lack of exercise – which almost always come with obesity.

Shared beliefs make US-India ties a defining partnership: Obama

US President Barack Obama said Wednesday their shared beliefs in the potential and dignity of every human being had led the US and India to make their relationship one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century.

“As we go forward together, the enduring lessons of this Republic Day can inspire us to seek a future of greater prosperity and opportunity for both our peoples,” Obama said in a message greeting the people of India on the country’s 62nd Republic Day.

“On behalf of the American people, I send my best wishes to the people of India and to those here in the US and around the world who are celebrating India’s Republic Day,” the White House quoted the president as saying.

“Michelle and I were honoured to visit India in November as India marked the 60th year of its democratic constitution,” Obama said.

“As I said then, the US and India are not only the world’s two largest democracies, we are two pluralistic societies that believe in the potential and dignity of every human being.”

“These are the beliefs that inspire the nearly three million Americans who can trace their roots to India – and all of whom enrich our society.”

“And they are the beliefs that have led Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh and I to make the US-India relationship one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century.”

“As we go forward together, the enduring lessons of this Republic Day can inspire us to seek a future of greater prosperity and opportunity for both our peoples,” Obama said.

The Indian community in the US celebrated the Republic Day with Ambassador Meera Shankar unfurling the national flag at a colourful function at the Indian embassy here on a wet chilly day.

After hoisting the flag in front of the embassy, covered with a thin spread of overnight snow, Shankar read out President Pratibha Patil’s message. About 200 members of the community joined in the celebrations.

Similar flag hoisting ceremonies were also held at Indian consulates in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Houston.

I’ll colour all my films if ‘Hum Dono’ succeeds: Dev Anand -Interview

Dev Anand is 87 but doesn’t hide his excitement at watching his hit 1961 film “Hum Dono” in colour. He wants audiences to see his charming self 50 years back and says he will colour more of his black and white films if viewers so demand.

“If ‘Hum Dono’ is widely accepted by the audience, I would take the idea and turn all my films into colour. I love all my films, as a painter is passionate about his paintings,” Dev Anand said on the sidelines of a promotional event.

“This film is the last black and white film of the Navketan (his home production) era and my first double role…It became the official entry from India in the Berlin film festival,” the veteran actor recalled.

The movie was written by his brother Vijay Anand and directed by Amarjeet.

Dev Anand admits that he did not take the initiative of adding colour to “Hum Dono”, which starred Nanda and Sadhna as his leading ladies.

“Some time earlier, someone approached me from Hyderabad and said they are looking at colourising the film ‘Hum Dono’. It was so beautifully colourised. So I decided to make people see Dev Anand of 50 years back,” said the actor, who played the role of two look-alike army men.

Apart from Dev Anand’s acting, the film’s music caught on with audiences with lilting melodies like “Main Zindagi ka Saath” and “Abhi Na Jao Chod Kar”.

Asked if he believes the drama of black and white can be recreated in colour, Dev Anand said: “Drama can be recreated…Only there are some mysteries, some shadows, some grey areas, which can’t be shown. But you see ‘Hum Dono’ in black and white and then in colour. I thought that I would never touch ‘Hum Dono’…when I saw it in colour my views changed. Watch it.”

The veteran actor, who cast an enduring spell on audiences with his films in the 1950s and 60s, is against remakes. He is clear that he will not do remakes of his films nor will he let others do so.

“I will not repeat my pictures. If I repeat my picture that means I am repeating myself,” he said

“No, I will not allow remaking of a film like ‘Guide’. No one can ever forget the film. Don’t remake it. Let people take the challenge of making a better picture than ‘Guide’,” Dev Anand urged filmmakers of today.

“Guide”, based on R.K. Narayan’s novel by the same name, was directed by his brother Vijay Anand and went on to become a hit critically and commercially. The 1965 film also starred Waheeda Rehman in one of her most fascinating roles.

India’s Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi stayed on course for the maiden Australian Open tennis title as they made it to the men’s doubles final with a hard-fought win over Belarussian Max Mirnyi and Canada’s Daniel Nestor here Thursday.

The third seeded Indian pair, who are playing together after nine years, won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 against the second seeded pair in the semifinals.

In the final, the India duo will face the top seeded pair of Bryan Brothers of the US.

Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan won 6-3, 6-2 against American Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherland Antilles in the other semi-final.

Australian Open: Paes-Bhupathi advance, Bopanna-Qureshi exit

India’s Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi moved into the men’s doubles quarterfinals while it was the end of the road for compatriot Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi in the Australian Open tennis tournament here Monday.

The third-seeded Paes and Bhupathi won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 against the 13th-seeded Spaniards Tommy Robredo and Marcell Granollers in the third round.

However, tenth-seeded Bopanna and Qureshi, who reached their maiden Grand Slam final in 2010 US Open, went down fighting to eighth-seeded Micheal Lodra of France and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-7(3) in the third round.
